Bulgaria Sees Surge in Foreign Students: Numbers Double Over the Past Decade

Bulgaria is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for international students. According to recent data, the number of foreign students in the country has doubled over the last ten years, now representing 8.6% of the total student population.

The majority come from non-EU countries, with Greek students making up the largest group (20%), followed by the UK (14%) and Ukraine (11%). Popular fields include Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary studies—especially among EU students. Those from outside the EU also show strong interest in Business, Economics, and IT.

Most international students choose public universities in major academic hubs like Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna. However, smaller cities with specialized programs, such as Stara Zagora, Pleven, and Blagoevgrad, also attract significant numbers.

With quality education, relatively affordable tuition fees, and growing international recognition, Bulgaria is fast positioning itself as a competitive option on the global academic map.
