About the university
The university was established as a higher medical institute on November 12, 1960. Its official founding date is considered to be October 1, 1961, marking the first school day of the inaugural academic year at the first higher education medical institution in Northeastern Bulgaria.
The Medical University of Varna (MU-Varna) is a state university in Bulgaria focused on training specialists in medicine and healthcare. It offers educational programs leading to Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Professional Bachelor’s degrees. The university operates as a legal entity with a broad range of activities, including: training professionals, offering PhD programs, providing postgraduate education for both medical and non-medical staff, conducting medical diagnostics, prevention, consultation, rehabilitation, and expert services through its university hospitals, as well as engaging in scientific research and applied sciences. MU-Varna also participates in international educational and scientific cooperation, alongside administrative, social, sports, publishing, and information activities.
In 2008, MU-Varna became the first university in Bulgaria to adopt the EFQM® Business Excellence model from the European Foundation for Quality Management. The university’s diplomas are recognized across all European Union countries. MU-Varna enjoys academic autonomy.
