The University of Food Technology (UFT) in Plovdiv has a rich history of over seventy years and remarkable traditions. It is one of the most important centers in Bulgaria in the field of food science and technology, unique in the Balkan Peninsula.
Bulgarian university education in food science and technology began in September 1948 – the “Agricultural Technology” department was created. In 1950 it grew into the faculty “Food and Flavor Industry”. “Technology of preservation of fruits, vegetables, meat and fish”; “Tobacco Technology”; “Wine technology” and “Technology of milk and milk products” departments were formed in the newly opened faculty, providing training in four technological specialties. With the decree of the Presidium of the National Assembly in 1953 the establishment of a new independent educational institution called the Higher Institute of Food and Flavor Industry renamed the University of Food Technologies in 2003.
The university has programs awarding Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral degrees and has post-doctoral research facilities. Since 2023 the UFT have had MSc program in “Technology of Wine and Wine-Based Beverages” developed in cooperation with the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) as a pilot project within the framework of the procedure for attribution of the OIV Certificate of conformity. The program complies with the OIV resolutions for training programs of oenologists.
The program, called – PlovdivWineUni is organized by a consortium of three Bulgarian universities the University of Food Technologies – Plovdiv, Agricultural University – Plovdiv and Medical University – Plovdiv. Leading academic and non-academic experts from all over the world, eg Italy, Germany and USA, will be part of the program as invited guest lecturers.
Bachelor of Engineering (BEng.) FOOD, GASTRONOMY AND TOURISM (FGT)
Bachelor’s Degree Programme Taught in English 4 years │ full time
OBJECTIVES
Understand different areas of food science, including technology, chemistry and nutrition, to develop a transdisciplinary understanding of culinary arts and gastronomic tourism.
Integrate a systemic view of all actors in the food supply chain, including social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects, to understand the global impact of food, culinary and tourism industries.
Apply technical skills in quality evaluation, research projects, product design, management and other knowledge based areas of food, gastronomy and tourism.

Master of Technology of Wine and Wine-Based Beverages
Master’s Degree Programme Taught in English 2 years │ full time
Following the successful experience of the l'Institut Agro Montpellier (France) and UC Davis (USA), this program is developed in cooperation with the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) as a pilot project within the framework of the procedure for attribution of the OIV Certificate of conformity. The program complies with the OIV resolutions for training programs of oenologists.

Language and specialized training
Foundation Year | Programme Taught in English 1 year │ full time
English language training is intended for foreigners who are preparing to study at the University of Technology or another higher education institution in the country. Language training is conducted within one academic year. The English language module aims to facilitate the adaptation of foreigners in the country by providing them with the most basic knowledge of their daily functioning.
Future students are expected to master the English language as a means of written and oral communication. This is achieved by studying the grammatical system of the language, its basic vocabulary and the most characteristic features of specialized scientific speech.
