Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Since 1994, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has been offering a Master of Science degree in Veterinary Medicine. The Veterinary Medicine program is recognized in the Classifier of Higher Education Areas and Professional Fields in Bulgaria. The Faculty holds program accreditation for training students in this field. The program is open to all applicants who have completed secondary education, and it follows the Uniform State Requirements, fully complying with EU Directive 2005/36/EC and its amending Directive 2013/55/EU, as well as Bulgarian legislation.

The program spans 11 semesters (5.5 years) and culminates in state examinations. Upon successful completion, students are awarded the qualification of "Veterinary Surgeon" and the degree of "Master of Sciences" (M.Sc.). Graduates may pursue post-graduate studies to obtain a PhD. Practical training is an integral part of the Veterinary Medicine curriculum and includes three training sessions after the VIth, VIIIth, and Xth semesters. The first practice focuses on Animal Science and lasts two weeks. The second practice is clinical and lasts four weeks. The final internship, or probation, is the last stage before graduation and offers professional specialization. These practices take place in various institutions such as livestock institutes, husbandry complexes, agricultural cooperatives, private farms, veterinary clinics, and offices selected by the Faculty Council. Opportunities for international practice are also available, subject to specific program conditions and approval by the Dean. The training in Veterinary Medicine is delivered by highly qualified and internationally accredited academic staff, following the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Throughout the program, students gain knowledge in:

  • Animal Anatomy, Physiology, Husbandry, Reproduction, and Hygiene
  • Animal Nutrition and Food Production Technologies for Animals
  • Animal Ethics and Protection
  • General Pathomorphology and Special Pathological

Students also develop the skills to:

  • Diagnose, treat, and differentiate animal diseases
  • Assess the risks of zoonotic diseases (transmitted from animals to humans)

Additionally, the program prepares students with competencies in:

  • Preventive medicine, including research, analysis, and certification
  • Hygiene, technology, control, and processing of animal-derived food for human consumption
  • Responsible use of veterinary pharmaceutical products for animal treatment, ensuring food safety, and environmental protection.

The annual tuition fee is 4,800 EUR, payable in two installments. The first half is due around September at the start of the winter semester, while the second half is payable around February at the beginning of the summer semester. The University of Forestry does not offer scholarships to cover tuition costs; however, students may explore student loan options in their home country. Additionally, note that tuition fees do not include accommodation or study materials.

Each year, the university admits approximately 50 students into the English-taught Veterinary Medicine program. The small class sizes foster a close-knit learning environment, enabling students to build strong connections with their peers and maintain close communication with their professors.
